Frequently Asked Questions
kAIboard — Last updated: March 26, 2026 — Version: 3.0
1. Getting Started
Why does kAIboard need the Contacts permission?
kAIboard reads your contacts to match the person you're chatting with to their phone number. From the international dialling code of the number (e.g. +49 for Germany) it determines which language to set. Contact names and phone numbers are never stored permanently — they are only used at the moment the language needs to be detected.
Why does kAIboard need the Accessibility permission?
This permission allows kAIboard to detect which contact you're chatting with in messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal. Without it, automatic language switching cannot work. kAIboard only reads the conversation title (the contact name) — it never reads your messages.
How do I set up kAIboard after installation?
- Open the kAIboard app
- Enable kAIboard as an input method in your device's keyboard settings
- Set kAIboard as your default keyboard
- Grant the Contacts permission when prompted
- Enable both Accessibility services: kAIboard uses two (one to detect the active contact in chats, another to support apps with non-standard interfaces). Both must be enabled for automatic switching to work correctly. When the app starts, a popup will remind you which permissions are missing and take you directly to the device's permission settings
- In the app settings, enable Notification Access (required for automatic language switching in quick replies from notifications)
- In the app settings, enable Notification Settings (required for usage alerts, such as token limit warnings for AI Translation)
- Start chatting — the language switches automatically!
Do I need to download anything extra?
The dictionaries for autocorrect are already included in the app for all 13 languages — you don't need to download anything to use autocorrect. For next-word prediction, you need to download the prediction model for each language you want to use from the Offline Models screen within the app: press the blue "Download" button next to the desired language. Once downloaded, the button turns red with "Remove" in case you want to free up space. Your most frequently used languages are preloaded into memory for instant switching.
For on-device translation (free, no Internet required), you can download language packs (~30 MB each) from the Translation Packs screen in Settings.
If you notice that predictions aren't working for a specific language, check in the Offline Models screen that the prediction model has been downloaded for that language.
Which languages does kAIboard support?
kAIboard supports 13 languages with full keyboard, autocorrect and prediction: Italian, German, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian and Georgian. Each language has its own optimised keyboard layout and Hunspell dictionary for autocorrect (included in the app). For next-word prediction, download the KenLM model for each language from the Offline Models screen.
The entire app interface — including settings, menus and all on-screen text — is fully translated into 14 languages (the 13 listed above plus Simplified Chinese). The legal documents (Privacy Policy, FAQ, Data Deletion) are also available in all 14 languages. The Chinese keyboard with Pinyin input will be available in a future update.
The system automatically recognises the phone dialling codes of over 80 countries (69 regions), mapped to the supported languages.
2. Automatic Language Switching
How does automatic language switching work?
When you open a chat, kAIboard detects the contact name, looks up their phone number in your address book and reads the international dialling code. For example, +39 means Italian, +49 German, +33 French. The keyboard layout switches automatically in about 65 milliseconds.
The system uses a multi-level priority chain: first it checks whether you've manually set a language for that contact in that specific app, then whether you have a global setting for that contact, then automatic detection from the phone prefix, and finally the device's system language as a fallback.
You can also set or change the language for any contact manually in two ways: from the Contact Management screen within the app (where you can view and change the language assigned to each contact), or by long-pressing the space bar directly on the keyboard while in a chat (a menu appears with the available languages and your choice is saved for that contact).
What happens if I have two contacts with the same name?
kAIboard will show a dialogue asking you to choose the correct contact, displaying the name and phone number of each duplicate. Your choice is remembered for the current session, so you won't be asked again until the keyboard service is restarted. The system also works correctly with contacts that have multiple phone numbers under the same name.
Does kAIboard work with group chats?
Yes. For group chats where no individual contact can be detected, you can manually assign a language. kAIboard remembers your choice using a privacy-safe hash — the group name is never stored in plain text.
Which messaging apps are supported?
Over 120 apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, Viber, WeChat, Discord, Slack and many more — including dating apps, ride-hailing, food delivery and marketplaces. It also works with quick replies from notifications and with Google Messages.
Note about Telegram
Telegram internally handles contact names, nicknames and numeric IDs differently from other messaging apps. Because of this Telegram-specific behaviour, you may occasionally notice a brief flash of the system language when entering or re-entering a chat with a contact detected automatically from the phone number in your address book. The flash resolves quickly and the system sets the correct language immediately afterwards. For contacts to which you've manually assigned a language (via Contact Management or long-pressing the space bar), the language switch should work smoothly and without delay, even on Telegram. This behaviour is caused by the way Telegram communicates contact information to the system and is not a kAIboard issue. In other messaging apps (WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger and others) the language switch should work smoothly for both automatic and manual contacts.
3. Translation
How does AI Translation (cloud) work?
kAIboard's AI translation works with two levels of control:
1. Master toggle (in the app Settings): This is the main switch. When it is off, no chat can translate and all per-chat translation settings are reset. When you turn it back on, you will need to re-enable translation for each chat with a new long-press on Enter. This is intentional: it prevents translation from silently re-activating on forgotten chats, consuming tokens without you noticing.
2. Per-chat activation (long-press on the Enter key): With the master toggle on, long-press the Enter key to enable translation for that specific conversation. The key icon changes from "↩" (normal Enter) to "⇄" (translation active). A second long-press disables translation for that chat. The preference is saved per contact: the next time you open the same chat, translation will still be active (or inactive) as you left it.
How to translate: Once translation is active, type your message normally in your language. When you press the Enter key on the kAIboard keyboard, the text is automatically translated into the contact's language. Then use the messaging app's send button (next to the text bar) to send the translated message. Translation only happens when you press the keyboard's Enter key — you can type freely, including punctuation and emoji, without interruption.
Cloud translation requires an active subscription and an Internet connection. Only outgoing text (what you type) is translated — kAIboard does not read, intercept or process incoming messages in any way. This is an intentional choice to ensure maximum privacy.
What is on-device translation and how does it work?
kAIboard also offers a completely free and offline translation mode, powered by Google ML Kit. It requires no subscription and no Internet connection.
How to use it: Long-press on a suggestion chip in the prediction bar above the keyboard. A popup opens with the text captured from the text field and a grid of all languages for which you've downloaded a pack. Tap the target language: translation happens instantly on-device. Then choose Insert (replaces the text in the field) or Copy (copies to clipboard). The Close button lets you go back without taking any action.
How to prepare: Go to Settings → Translation Packs and download the language packs you need (~30 MB each). All 14 kAIboard languages are supported.
When to use it: On-device translation is ideal for quick, simple translations and for situations without an Internet connection. For complex texts or high-quality requirements, cloud AI translation (which requires a subscription) offers better results.
Privacy: On-device translation does not transmit any data to third parties. The text stays exclusively on your device.
What happens with contacts in non-Latin languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Georgian)?
When translation is active for a contact whose language uses a non-Latin alphabet (Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Georgian), the keyboard automatically switches to the layout of your device's system language (e.g. English) so you can type comfortably. You type in your language and translation takes care of converting the text into the contact's alphabet and language when you press Enter. Autocorrect and suggestions also adapt to the language of the displayed layout.
When translation is turned off for the same contact (with a second long-press on Enter), the layout automatically reverts to the contact's native alphabet (Cyrillic, Greek or Georgian).
Is translation secure? Are my messages saved?
Cloud translation (AI): The text is transmitted securely via an HTTPS-encrypted connection to a Cloudflare relay, which forwards it to the OpenAI API for translation. The text is never saved on any server — it passes through and is returned immediately. The OpenAI API key is never exposed on your device.
On-device translation: The text never leaves your device. Translation is performed entirely locally via Google ML Kit. No data is transmitted to external servers.
4. Keyboard and Typing
How does autocorrect work?
kAIboard's autocorrect uses a multi-factor system that analyses the edit distance between the typed word and dictionary candidates, the sentence context (previous words), real-world word frequency, key proximity on the keyboard and your personal typing habits. The system supports correction of transpositions (swapped letters), missing doubles, accidentally pressed adjacent keys and missing accented characters — across all 13 supported languages, including languages with complex diacritics such as Turkish, Polish and Greek.
Autocorrect is intentionally conservative: it shows corrections in the suggestion bar and applies them automatically only when the system is sufficiently confident. There's nothing more frustrating than a keyboard that overwrites what you actually intended to type. Control stays with you.
If autocorrect applies an unwanted correction, you can undo it by pressing the delete key within about one and a half seconds — the original text is restored.
How good are kAIboard's predictions compared to other keyboards?
kAIboard's prediction engine is built on solid foundations: statistical language models (KenLM), comprehensive dictionaries (Hunspell) and a personalised learning system that improves with every word you type — everything runs entirely on your device with no cloud dependency.
That said, kAIboard is developed by a single independent developer. The predictions are solid and improve significantly with use, but the system is under constant development and improvement — every update brings refinements to the accuracy and responsiveness of suggestions.
What truly sets kAIboard apart is something no other keyboard does: knowing which language you need before you even type a single character.
Does kAIboard learn from my typing habits?
Yes. The learning system records the words you use most frequently, the most common word combinations (up to triples of consecutive words) and the proper names you type. Suggestions improve over time with an intelligent decay mechanism: recent habits carry more weight than older ones, so the system adapts as your writing style evolves.
Learning only happens when you tap a suggestion from the bar — automatic corrections are not recorded to prevent correction errors from being learned as habits. If a correction is wrong and you reject it, the system learns not to suggest it again.
All learning data stays on your device and can be deleted at any time from the Privacy section in Settings.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes, kAIboard includes two typing shortcuts that speed up writing:
Double-tap the space bar → ". " (full stop + space + auto-capitalisation). Lets you end a sentence and start a new one with a quick double tap.
Double-tap the full stop key → ", " (comma + space). This is a shortcut exclusive to kAIboard — no other keyboard offers it. Lets you quickly insert a comma without searching for it in the layout.
Both shortcuts only trigger with two taps in quick succession (within 300ms) and do not interfere with normal typing or with long-press (which opens the language selector and punctuation popup respectively).
Can I change the keyboard size?
Yes. In the app Settings you can choose from three sizes: Small (more compact, ideal for large screens or one-handed use), Medium (default, balanced) and Large (bigger keys, ideal for those who prefer larger targets). The change applies immediately to all layouts (letters, symbols, numbers) without a restart.
Can I customise the vibration and key sounds?
Yes. kAIboard offers a differentiated haptic feedback system with three levels: vibration is light for letters, medium for the space bar and punctuation, and firm for Enter and the delete key. You can adjust vibration intensity with a slider from 0% to 100% in Settings, or disable it entirely.
For sound, you can choose between Android system sounds or enable custom kAIboard sounds, which are also differentiated by key type, with a dedicated volume slider. Custom sounds are activated via a separate toggle in Settings.
5. Privacy and Data
What data does kAIboard collect?
kAIboard follows a local-first approach. Contact detection, autocorrect, predictions, language preferences and on-device translation all happen on your device. The only data sent externally is the text you choose to translate with cloud AI translation (via a secure HTTPS connection), and it is never saved on any server. On-device translation does not transmit any data to third parties.
No analytics, no tracking, no advertising ID, no cookies, no profiling.
Is kAIboard GDPR compliant?
Yes. kAIboard offers four options in the Privacy section: export your data in JSON format, delete only learning data, delete all local data (including downloaded on-device translation packs), or delete all cloud data. Cloud data (subscription information) is automatically deleted after 90–365 days of inactivity.
Crash reports are entirely optional: you can enable or disable them at any time in Settings. When you enable them for the first time, a confirmation dialogue is shown. Crash reports contain only technical error information and device metadata — they never contain typed text, contact names or other personal data.
What are the administrator logs visible in the app?
For maximum transparency, kAIboard automatically logs every change made to your account from the server side — for example, in the event of a token reimbursement due to a dispute or a technical issue. These logs are visible in the dedicated section within the app, so you can check at any time whether and when an operation was performed on your account. If no logs are present, it means no server-side change has ever been made. Administrator logs are automatically deleted according to the data retention policy, or you can delete them manually with the "Delete cloud data" button in the Privacy section.
Can I delete all my data?
Yes. Go to Settings → Privacy and use the available buttons:
Export data: Download your learning data in JSON format.
Delete learning data: Clears personalised predictions and learned proper names, keeping all other settings.
Delete all local data: Clears all settings, language preferences, learning data and downloaded translation packs. The app restarts as a clean installation. Prediction models and translation packs will need to be re-downloaded.
Delete cloud data: Deletes all subscription information, history and administrator logs from the Firebase servers.
Uninstalling the app automatically removes all local data.
6. Pricing and Subscription
How much does kAIboard cost?
kAIboard is a one-time purchase for €2.39 (tax included). It includes all core features: automatic language switching, intelligent autocorrect, next-word prediction, free on-device translation (ML Kit), keyboard shortcuts, customisable haptic feedback, emoji picker, contact language management and local backup.
What does the subscription add?
The optional monthly subscription unlocks two premium features: AI Cloud Translation (powered by OpenAI, superior quality for complex texts) and Google Drive backup.
Three plans are available based on monthly translation usage: Plus (€3.49/month — ~2,130 translations), Pro (€5.99/month — ~4,200 translations) and Max (€9.49/month — ~8,530 translations). The three plans differ only in the number of monthly translations.
On-device translation (ML Kit) remains free for all users, regardless of subscription.
Can I use my subscription on multiple devices?
Yes. Your token balance syncs across all devices using the same Google Play account. The monthly token limit is shared — for example, if you have 250,000 tokens with the Plus plan, that total is shared across all your devices.
What happens if I cancel the subscription and reinstall the app?
With an active subscription (not cancelled): If you uninstall and reinstall the app, or install it on a new device or multiple devices with the same Google account, the subscription and token balance sync automatically via Google Play and Firebase. You don't need to do anything — restoration happens automatically on first launch.
With a cancelled subscription (grace period): If you reinstall the app on the same device, the system finds the subscription and token balance via Firebase and restores them automatically, even during the grace period. On other devices that already had the app installed with the same account, restoration should happen automatically if the device was already registered in the system.
How does backup work?
kAIboard offers two backup options. All users can create a local backup of their settings and learning data. Subscribers can also back up to their personal Google Drive. In both cases, the translation token balance is always synced from the cloud — it is never saved in the backup file, to prevent duplication.
7. Troubleshooting
The keyboard doesn't switch language automatically.
Check the following:
- The Contacts permission must be enabled
- Both Accessibility services must be active (kAIboard uses two)
- The contact must have a phone number with an international dialling code in your address book
- If the contact isn't in your address book, you can assign the language manually by long-pressing the space bar
Translation isn't working.
For cloud translation (AI): Make sure you have an active subscription with available tokens. Check that the master translation toggle is enabled in the app Settings. Ensure you've activated translation for the specific chat by long-pressing the Enter key (the icon should show ⇄). You need an Internet connection.
For on-device translation: Check that you've downloaded the required language packs from the Translation Packs screen in Settings. On-device translation is activated by long-pressing a suggestion in the prediction bar, not via the Enter key.
The Enter key icon doesn't show the translation arrows.
Check that the master translation toggle is enabled in the app Settings. If it is, try leaving the chat and re-entering it. The icon only changes in chats where you've activated translation with a long-press on Enter.
Predictive suggestions aren't appearing.
Check in the Offline Models screen that the prediction model has been downloaded for the language you're using. The autocorrect dictionaries are included in the app, but next-word prediction models must be downloaded separately for each language.
On-device translation doesn't show available languages.
You first need to download at least one language pack from the Translation Packs screen in Settings. Each pack is about 30 MB. Once downloaded, the language will appear in the selection grid when you long-press a suggestion in the prediction bar.
